AI predicts multiple sclerosis in ten years, according to Galician hospital

Multiple sclerosis can be predicted. Thanks to data collected by the Neurology Service of the Hospital Clínico de Santiago de Compostelaof those patients who suffer from disease.

According to a new study, thanks to the first MRI performed on a patient, the program uses artificial intelligence (AI) to very accurately predict the development of these patients for up to 10 years, with a reliability of almost 90%. from the Translational Research Group for Neurological Diseases (ITEN) of IDIS and IIS Galicia.

The study, published in the journal Plos One, analyzed a total of 446 records of affected people over a follow-up period of at least one year. This machine learning model predicts disability progression in patients with multiple sclerosis using baseline MRI data and clinical assessments using the Expanded Disability Status Scale.

“The work offers new models for describing patient progression using artificial intelligence programs that predict their trajectories using these descriptors, and also gives us insight into what factors contribute to this evolution, such as age of onset or injury.” explains the first author of the work, Silvia Campagnioni. Thus, The study will help optimize the dosage of treatment for multiple sclerosis. in terms of dose and duration of treatment, as well as optimizing its use based on the profile of each patient or treatment, while improving the trajectory through the use of personalized ML predictors.

As for the most noticeable results, The study showed that “age of onset” is one of the most influential characteristics of the developed regressor models. Moreover, the number of brain lesions greater than or equal to nine on the initial MRI was found to be the most influential variable in the classifier model decisions.

“The work has a significant impact not only in scientific and technical terms, but also in economic and social terms,” says IDIS researcher Roberto Agis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory neurodegenerative disease.
