When Alexander Zverev won his first two ATP Masters 1000 titles in a row in Rome and Canada in 2017, he already hinted that he could become one of the most dominant players in the territory. And after a few seasons, his track record already includes seven titles in this category.
The third-place finisher at the Rolex Paris Masters lifted the trophy at the last ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, defeating local favorite Hugo Humbert in the final this Sunday 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 15 minutes.
For Zverev, who has a 7-5 record in ATP Masters 1000 finals, this is his second title of the year (he also won in Rome) and his first at this level since Cincinnati 2021. The German is already eighth. the player with the most crowns in a category.
Most ATP Masters 1000 titles (since 1990):
40. Novak Djokovic
36. Rafael Nadal
28. Roger Federer
17. Andre Agassi
14. Andy Murray
11. Pete Sampras
8. Thomas Muster
7. Michael Chang and Alexander Zverev
In addition, at 27 years old, he can boast victories at the ATP Masters 1000 in five different places out of nine possible: Madrid (2018, 2021), Rome (2017, 2024), Canada (2017), Cincinnati (2021). and Paris (2024).
He achieved this against a player who arrived at the event skating on a French indoor hard court. And Humbert appeared in the last round in Paris with a 13-0 record in these conditions, winning titles in Metz and Marseille. Of course, his last defeat dates back to November last year in Paris from Zverev.
Then it was in the third round (6-4, 6-7(3), 7-6(5)), where he managed to level the Lexus ATP Head2Head score between them (1-1), after Humbert won their first fight one on one in Halle 2021.
But this time the result was the same as a year ago, although with a little less stress. Fundamentally, because Zverev entered the court with maximum concentration on his serve, in the first set, in which he did not concede a single point from the first serve (9/9) and recorded 94% of his total served on his serve, according to Infosys ATP statistics.
For his part, Humbert, who defeated No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz en route to the final, appeared to be feeling the pressure of becoming the first local player to win the title on home soil since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did so in 2008. .
Despite the crowd’s devotion to Humbert, the number three was also unwavering early in the second set, which opened with another break – his third of the match – that helped him win eight of the first set’s ten games. match (6-2, 2-0).
Zverev not only did not calm down, but also showed no signs of weakness and maintained his level until the end, making a total of four breaks from six opportunities and converting 86% of his serves. This gives him his 66th win of the season, making him the player with the most games won in 2024.
