All indications are that OpenAI is not receiving payments from Apple for using ChatGPT on iPhone.

At this week’s WWDC event Manzana announced a new collaboration with OpenAIcreator ChatGPT, which will allow iPhone, iPad and Mac users to access ChatGPT from their devices. Now, new details have emerged about the financial aspects of the deal, and it appears that Apple is not paying OpenAI to use its technology.

Apple has announced that new free artificial intelligence capabilities will be coming to the iOS 18 operating system. One notable feature is that Siri can now send questions it can’t answer directly to ChatGPT, an artificially intelligent chatbot that answers for requests in text form.

According to sources close to the matter, Bloomberg said OpenAI would not receive direct compensation for offering ChatGPT to Apple users.

Instead, OpenAI will benefit from Apple’s large customer base that will use its technology; some may become paying customers. Apple believes its presence on more than 2 billion active devices is worth more than any board.

However, there is a cost to operating AI. OpenAI has to pay Microsoft to use its cloud computing system to run ChatGPT. The more ChatGPT users, the higher the score.

ChatGPT is currently used by approximately 180 million users every month.

During WWDC, Apple indicated that it does not have an exclusive partnership with OpenAI; Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi said that other artificial intelligence models will appear on Apple devices in the future.

While OpenAI may get more exposure from the deal, adding ChatGPT to Apple’s products could boost iPhone sales, Apple’s biggest source of revenue.

Apple’s AI software update is free, but it will only be available on the two currently released iPhone models: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

It is believed that the new iPhone model, which will be released in the fall, may motivate customers who have older models to upgrade.
