Ribera University Hospital has installed next-generation genetic sequencing equipment (NGS) for the analysis of cancerous tumors.
The new equipment, thanks to a powerful tumor DNA sequencing system, allows for a more accurate diagnosis, as well as individualized cancer treatment and, as a result, can provide better clinical outcomes.
As Angel Zúñiga, a doctor specializing in clinical genetics at the Hospital de la Ribera, explained, “this advanced technology helps in searching for and detecting genetic variants for which there are effective drugs, and if the tumor has these mutations, the treatment can be personalized,” which increases the likelihood of its success.
Antonio Cremades, head of the pathology service at the Hospital de la Ribera, points out other advantages of the new equipment. “It is capable of analyzing 60 genes associated with cancer, as well as frequent gene fusions in tumor cells and pharmacogenetic analysis, which will allow the most appropriate chemotherapy to be chosen, avoiding side effects.”
The hospital’s tumor committee, made up of a multidisciplinary team of experts in oncology, pathology and clinical genetics, will select patients on a weekly basis who may benefit from this new technology.
It is estimated that more than 300 patients at Ribera University Hospital will benefit from this new genetic analysis technology every year.
precision medicine
According to the head of the oncology department, Teresa Taberner, “advanced genetic sequencing technologies used in cancer provide a deep and detailed understanding of the genetic profile of a tumor, which facilitates the development of personalized and effective treatment strategies.”
“This not only improves clinical outcomes, but also optimizes patients’ quality of life by allowing for more precise and aggressive cancer treatment,” Taberner added.
On the other hand, clinical geneticist Angel Zuñiga assured that “new DNA reading systems have paved the way for individualization of patient therapy based on molecular profiles, leading to the emergence of precision medicine.”
