Madrid – Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid, assured that derby referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer “made the right decision” when he decided to stop the match at the Civitas Metropolitano against Atlético Madrid in the 69th minute for throwing objects at Thibault Courtois.
“It was the right action on the part of the referee because we had to stop the game for a few minutes and go to the dressing room. It was the right decision that no one liked to stop the game, but I think the referee acted well,” the Italian coach defended at a press conference.
Ancelotti was reluctant to judge the punishment Atletico Madrid might face following the incidents. “I’m just a coach, I have to evaluate the sport and control it. There are people more experienced than me to make the right decision.”
And he ruled out the 22-minute break would impact his team and allow opponents to catch their breath. “Absolutely not, it was a game with such a problem that it affected both teams equally because they both wanted to play, but the referee’s decision was correct.”
Finally, he revealed what he said to referee Ancelotti and Diego Simeone before the match was stopped. “He told us they shot lighters twice and if they shot again he had to stop the game to rest for ten minutes and then we would start again.”
