Stefanos Tsitsipas entered the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters ranked 12th in the PIF ATP Rankings, his lowest position since January 2019. His father and coach Apostolos Tsitsipas remained confident in his son and the Greek star won his third trophy in Monte Carlo this week. .
“I never had any doubt that I would play at this level,” Apostolos said. “Stefanos is a dreamer. I could say that he is also still young at heart and mind.”
“Like every young person, you need to believe in life, you need to believe in the goals that you set for yourself. That’s why we’re here to remind you that you deserve to be who you are.”
Stefanos came to the Principality with a record of 11-6 on the year and has won just one title since the 2022 grass season. This week, Tsitsipas defeated three top-10 opponents (Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner and Kasper Ruud) to claim his third Masters. 1000 title.
“Any time you overcome all these difficulties, all these obstacles after a difficult week, we know very well what it means to play at these levels, it’s a big liberation for everyone, for the team,” Apostolos said. “It’s definitely nice that we were able to be successful and make the most of it. This is the feeling.”
Tsitsipas not only lifted the trophy, but did so with overwhelming dominance. With the exception of the semi-final against Jannik Sinner, the most in-form player on the ATP tour today, the Greek has not lost a single set.
“From a coach’s point of view, this is one of the best tournaments he has participated in. I can say that the level was one of the best on clay courts,” said Apostolos. “There were times when he was in the zone, as we say in tennis, and sometimes he managed to stay there for a long time, which is really very beautiful. Hopefully we will see this again in the future and then we will see some great tennis from Stefanos.”
As happy as the Tsitsipas family is with Stefanos’ victory this week in Monte Carlo, there are plenty of important tournaments to look forward to in the coming weeks. As Apostolos noted, they have a “long dirt season” ahead of them.
“(It) shows he’s on the right track. (From) their preparation (we) have already seen some results,” Tsitsipas said. “I hope he will be fresh and arrive at Roland Garros with the best performance.”
