Apple published White paper in which it highlights the durability of its devices and announces the expansion of its do-it-yourself repair program to Europe.
In the 24-page document, the company details its “durability through design” approach to its products.
Because it’s important. Apple strives to balance durability and repairability of its products, prioritizing durability without sacrificing security or performance. This reflects a shift in focus towards greater sustainability and affordability of repairs.
This change was gradual and had been brewing for some time. This policy is definitely more in line with its sustainable approach than the stage where it was virtually impossible to repair devices without having to contact an official support team, where prices could be a deterrent.
Key points.
Context. For years, Apple has been criticized for making its devices difficult to repair. Several years ago, the company began taking steps to improve its maintainability. The last option is to repair with used spare parts.
This decision was made partly due to sustainability considerations outlined in the community value statement, and partly due to the growing movement around the right to repair.
In detail. Apple argues that prioritizing durability over repairability is better for sustainability. And use the iPhone charging port example:
“Making the charging port replaceable would require additional components, which would increase the carbon footprint of each device. An increase in manufacturing emissions is only justified if the charging port requires replacement in at least 10% of devices. In fact, the actual service rate was below 0.1%.
It’s like the old dilemma: buy a car that’s durable and difficult to repair, or a car that’s less durable but easy to repair. Apple is betting on the first option and says it will be better for the environment and the user in the long run.
Numbers. According to Apple:
In perspective. Apple’s approach to longevity represents a significant change in the technology industry. By prioritizing durability and gradually improving repairability, the company seeks a balance between sustainability, safety and ease of use.
