April 29, 2024 Vaccine poliovirus type 1 in a respiratory specimen from a child in Catalonia.

April 29, 2024

02/16/2024 Catalonia reported the discovery poliovirus type 1 vaccine in a respiratory specimen from a 2-year-old child who was properly vaccinated and had recently visited Pakistan.

The child had fever and respiratory symptoms, without gastrointestinal symptoms and acute peripheral paralysis, with a favorable course, without complications. No symptomatic cases were identified among the contacts, and all tests were negative. Wastewater samples were negative.

There are currently limited areas of endemic transmission of wild-type poliovirus and derivatives of any of the three strains included in the oral vaccine. As long as there are unvaccinated or undervaccinated populations in countries with significant international traffic to Spain and polio is not eradicated from the world, there is a risk of reintroduction.

In Spain, vaccination coverage in 2022 will be 2 doses of HEXAVPI 98.19% and 1st booster vaccination of HEXAVPI 95.24%.
