Milan, Italy (CNN) — Archaeologists discovered an intricately decorated blue room, known as an ancient Roman sanctuary Holy placeDuring recent excavations in the center of Pompeii, Italy.

Italy’s Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano visited the archaeological site on Tuesday and described the ancient city as a “still partly unknown treasure.”

On the walls of the room are female figures that apparently represent the four seasons of the year, as well as allegories of agriculture and animal husbandry.

The new discovery came amid excavations in the Regio IX area of central Pompeii, a residential area that is currently one of the most active excavation sites in terms of new finds.

The excavation is part of a wider project to ensure a perimeter between excavated and non-excavated areas of the archaeological park, which currently contains more than 13,000 excavated rooms.

The project aims to improve the infrastructure of the area, making “the protection of the vast Pompeian heritage… more effective and sustainable,” the Culture Ministry announced.

Other recent discoveries in the area include furniture belonging to a house, a bronze kit with two jugs and two lamps, building materials used in renovations, and consumed oyster shells.

Last week it was reported that Pompeii archaeologists had discovered children’s drawings depicting violent scenes of gladiators and hunters fighting animals.

The drawings, believed to have been made by five- to seven-year-old children shortly before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., were found on the walls of a back room in the residential section of the archaeological park.

He showed that even children were exposed to extreme violence in ancient times.
