At least four people killed and dozens injured in Russian bombing of a hypermarket in Kharkiv International

At least four people were killed and several dozen injured in Russian attacks on a busy DIY hypermarket and residential area in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv this Saturday, Ukrainian authorities have confirmed. It was the third Russian attack during the day against the city – one of the new fronts opened by Moscow -; another raid killed seven people.

The governor of the region, Oleh Sinyhubov, elaborated on national television that two guided missiles have struck a large DIY store located in a residential area of Kharkiv. At least four people have died, two of them store employees. In addition, 40 people were injured in the attack and another 16 are still missing, Sinyhubov elaborated.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said there were more than a hundred people in the establishment when the bombs fell. “The attack targeted the shopping center, where there were many people; this is clearly terrorism,” Terekhov said.

“I was at my workplace. I heard the first impact and… with my colleague, we fell to the ground. There was a second impact and we were covered in rubble,” said Dmytro Sirotenko, 26, after being attacked and with a large wound on his face. Hypermarket employee Sirotenko said he was carried to a safe place by a rescuer along with other colleagues and shoppers.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, calling it “another example of Russian madness. There is no other way to describe it”. “When we tell world leaders that Ukraine needs real air security and decisive measures to protect its people, so that Russian terrorists cannot come close to our border; we are talking about preventing such attacks from happening,” he added.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, is just 30 kilometres from the Russian border and has been the target of Russian attacks for several weeks. This month Russian troops also made some incursions into the northern part of the Kharkiv region.
