(CNN) – Two days after the La Liga match between Atlético Madrid and local rivals Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid announced that defender Robin Le Normand suffered a “head injury” when he collided with Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tshuameni at the end of Sunday’s match (1- 1).
Moments before the end of the match, Real Madrid midfielder Tchouameni headed in Lucas Vazquez’s cross as Le Normand dived to defend a scoring opportunity. Tchouameni hit the ball just before he and Le Normand accidentally bumped heads.
Le Normand, a regular in Atlético’s defense and a Spain international, fell straight to the ground and immediately doubled over in pain. Chuameni also fell to the ground, holding his head.
The game didn’t take long to arrive. The broadcast showed Le Normand slowly leaving the Metropolitano Stadium pitch as two members of Atlético Madrid’s medical staff walked alongside the former Real Sociedad star.
Atlético issued a statement on Tuesday saying the incident with the 27-year-old was far more serious than originally thought.
“Robin Le Normand suffered a severe blow to the head in the final minutes of the Madrid derby, which led to a series of tests and assessment by specialists who determined that he was suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with a subdural hematoma,” the club said.
A subdural hematoma occurs when blood accumulates between the brain and skull.
The brief statement reads: “Our player’s return to competition will follow the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of injury.”
Atlético Madrid face Benfica in a Champions League match at the Estádio da Luz in Portugal on Wednesday.
