Barcelona beat Lyon to win their third Women’s Champions League

(CNN) — Barcelona scored two second-half goals to beat Lyon 2-0 and win their second consecutive Women’s Champions League this Saturday at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

The Catalans, playing their fifth Champions League final in six years, prevailed thanks to goals from world number one Aitana Bonmati and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas to claim a third UWCL title in four years. in front of 50,827 spectators, which is a record.

Bonmati opened the scoring in the 63rd minute with a shot that deflected Vanessa Gilles’ defense and beat Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler to make it 1–0.

Barcelona doubled their lead in stoppage time when Putellas, coming off the bench, headed Claudia Pina’s cross into the net to seal the win.

Before Saturday, Barcelona had lost finals to Lyon in 2019 and 2022. The French club were in their 11th final in 15 seasons.

With the victory, Barcelona’s players complete the club’s first quadruple tournament, which has already secured the Spanish Super Cup, League F and Copa del Rey this season.

The Blaugranas’ three Women’s Champions League titles make it the club’s third most in history, behind Lyon’s eight and Eintracht Frankfurt’s four.
