This almost shouldn’t have happened in theaters. Cyclistsstar-studded biker drama similar to director Martin Scorsese Sons of Anarchy, failed on its way to theaters last year. Disney/20th Century Pictures decided to scrap their release plan, but luckily Focus Features saw the value in bringing this film to the big screen.
This year, Tom Hardy and Austin Butler will join many more actors tearing through the cities and cornfields (that you know and love). Let’s get into some minor details about this movie.
As the kids say, biker soap operas set the mood, and Butler recently admitted (talking to Josh Brolin for Interview
magazine) that one of the greatest parts of this project was that Tom Hardy was a real jerk:“(T)here’s an intimate sensibility to The Bikeriders. We have to be close to the roar of engines and the smell of oil. It was nice to go into something more independent and play in that space a little bit. But one of the things I was thinking about earlier when you were talking about this relaxation on set was that Tom Hardy surprised me. I imagined him as a grizzly bear, always serious. Indeed, he is one of the funniest people I have ever met. “He would joke until he had to take action, and then he would become the most stressed-out guy I’ve ever seen.”
Cyclists it takes its title and inspiration from photojournalist Danny Lyon’s stunning black-and-white photobook of the same name, which he conceived during and after working for a real-life biker club in the 1960s.
The film revolves around an ensemble cast led by two Oscar nominees, Hardy (as Johnny), who mentors up-and-coming Benny, played by Austin Butler. Jodie Comer stars as Benny’s elderly lady, Katie, as their lives revolve around a Chicago meeting to mark the decade’s unrest. Naturally, the club will change from an idealistic group of outsiders to a more 1%-oriented gang of criminals, and I can’t wait to see Hardy lose all his shit over it.
Will this film end up winning awards? Don’t count on it. TheInSneider previously reported that the film did well in the festival format, but executives decided a commercial focus would be better. So, it should be fun, which is what we need most in cinemas.
Besides Hardy, Butler and Comer, Cyclists It stars Norman Reedus (as Funny Sonny), who already spends most of his time riding his bike, even with people like Happy Keanu Reeves. The film also stars Boyd Holbrook, Michael Shannon, Damon Herriman, Karl Glusman, Beau Knapp, Mike Fast, Toby Wallace and Happy Anderson.
Six months later than Disney’s planned release date, Focus Features will cease to exist. Cyclists in theaters June 21, 2024. Given that superheroes almost certainly won’t dominate the box office this summer, it might be the anti-heroes for moviegoers, and guess what? The damn time has come. Let’s go for a ride, guys.
