Rio de Janeiro, March 2 (EFE). – The Brazilian Ministry of Health has declared this Saturday a day of mobilization across the country to stop the spread of dengue mosquitoes, which have so far accounted for more than one million cases of the disease. year.
Civil society organizations, government agencies, health authorities, regional and municipal authorities and the media have come together to raise awareness among the entire population about the characteristics of the disease and how to prevent it.
The so-called “Day Against Dengue” focused action on Brazilian homes because that is where 75% of virus transmissions are concentrated, according to the Health Portfolio.
To this end, families were advised to check their homes to ensure water tanks are properly sealed, dispose of waste properly and keep pet water containers clean at all times.
Likewise, checking gutters, avoiding tires in open areas and not hoarding scrap metal and trash are actions that are also encouraged in schools, government agencies and businesses.
According to the Ministry, these actions, which take no more than ten minutes to complete, are the best weapon in the fight, which must be ongoing, to stop the spread of Aedes aegypti.
And the rise in dengue cases in the country has been significant in these early months of the year. In January alone, it was up 252% compared to the same month last year.
So far in 2024, Brazil has already reported 1,038,475 probable cases and at least 258 confirmed deaths from the disease, as another 651 deaths apparently of dengue fever remain under investigation.
The Federal District of Brasilia is by far the state with the highest incidence rate: 3,612 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. They are followed, according to official data, by Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Paraná and Goiás.
This Saturday, the Minister of Health, Nicia Trindade Lima, visited several homes in towns in the states of Bahia and Espirito Santo, the latter already under a state of emergency due to dengue fever, where she recalled the importance of government agencies and society working together. against dengue mosquito.
