Breaking news on Iran attacks on Israel, war with Hamas and situation in Gaza, LIVE: News, reactions and more

It is morning in the Middle East. This is what you need to know

The United States will impose new sanctions against Tehran following Iran’s massive attack on Israel over the weekend, according to national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Most of the 300 projectiles, which were believed to have been launched from inside Iranian territory, were intercepted by Israel and its allies. Iran said it attacked Israel in response to an Israeli attack on its diplomatic compound in Syria.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the Biden administration would use sanctions “to continue to disrupt the Iranian regime’s malign and destabilizing activity.”

Here are the latest developments in the field:

Israel is considering a response: Israel’s war cabinet ended its fifth meeting to discuss the response to Iran’s attack without reaching a conclusion. They are reviewing military and diplomatic options. The United States expects Israel’s response to be limited in scope, sources told CNN. Regional leaders and Israel’s allies have called for restraint.

Iraq has denied involvement: Israel said some of Iran’s strikes over the weekend were launched from Iraq, but Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani denied this to CNN.

UN sanctions Iran’s foreign minister: The United States will restrict the activities of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his delegation when they are in New York this week, a source told CNN.

Deaths in refugee camps: At least 13 people, including seven children, were killed in an attack targeting the al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza, according to hospital officials.

cost of war: The US Navy said it has spent nearly $1 billion on munitions to thwart “more than 130 direct attacks” on US military and merchant ships in the Middle East over the past six months.

cross border firing: The Israeli military said it has killed three Hezbollah fighters, including two commanders, in air strikes in southern Lebanon.

The death of a child is in the headlines: The United States will visit Israel with new information from the Washington Post report that contradicts the results of the Israeli investigation into the death of Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl in Gaza.

research problems: The United Nations Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of actively obstructing efforts to gather evidence from victims and direct witnesses of Hamas attacks in Israel on 7 October.

Airdrop continues: The US military delivered more aid to Gaza, this time about 25,300 food equivalents. Humanitarian organizations have warned that airdrops are “good opportunities for photos, but a terrible way to deliver aid.”
