From Biden, Obama and Borrell to Miley, Maduro and Musk: unanimous rejection of the assassination attempt on Trump

The attack made against former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021) during a rally in Pennsylvania this Saturday has generated a wave of rejection and solidarity towards the current president and rival in the electoral race, the Republican candidate for the White House, the Democrat Joe Biden; through former ruler Barack Obama and the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Argentine President Javier Melli and billionaire Elon Musk.

US President Joe Biden was one of the first to speak out, expressing relief that Trump was out of danger.

“I’m glad to hear he is safe and well. I’m praying for him and his family, and everyone at the rally,” Biden said in a statement.

Furthermore, he strongly condemned the act of violence, saying: “There is no place for this type of violence in the United States. We must come together as a nation to condemn it.”

However, he stopped short of calling it an assassination attempt: “I have an opinion about it, but no data.”

Former President Barack Obama also issued a statement emphasizing the need to maintain civility in politics: “Everyone should be relieved that he was not seriously injured, and take time to renew our commitment to civility and respect in politics.”

Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress unanimously condemned the attack.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said on X (formerly Twitter): “This horrific act of violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously condemned.”

For his part, Democrat leader in the lower house Hakeem Jeffries thanked the security services for their quick response and affirmed: “The United States is a democracy. Political violence of any kind is never acceptable.”

Josep Borrell, “shocked by the news”

From Brussels, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, was “shocked” by the attack and strongly condemned the act: “I am shocked by the news of the attack against President Trump, which I strongly condemn. Once again, we are witnessing unacceptable acts of violence against political representatives.”

The European Council’s acting president, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, expressed his support for Trump in a statement: “My thoughts and prayers are with President @realDonaldTrump in these dark hours.”

Orban met Trump last Thursday after attending a NATO summit in Washington and making controversial visits to Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing, which caused discomfort in the European Union (EU) and the Atlantic alliance as no consultations had been held beforehand.

From Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he felt “disgusted” by the attack against the former president.

Trudeau, who expressed his solidarity with Trump and all Americans, stressed, “It is not possible to say it more often: political violence is never acceptable.”

Solidarity with Bolsonaro, who was also attacked in 2018

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a personal friend of Trump’s who was attacked during a rally in the city of Juiz de Fora on September 6, 2018, when he was a presidential candidate, expressed his solidarity and wished him a speedy recovery. Trump: “Our solidarity with the greatest world leader of the moment. We hope for his speedy recovery.”

Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called for the attack to be rejected: “This attack must be firmly denounced by all defenders of democracy and dialogue in politics.”

For his part, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also condemned the attack: “Regardless of what happened, we condemn what happened to former president Donald Trump. The violence is irrational and inhumane,” he said.

From Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro rejected the attack and wished Trump “health and long life”: “On behalf of all Venezuelans, I want to denounce and reject the attack against President Donald Trump and wish him a speedy recovery. We have been adversaries, but I wish President Trump health and long life.”

Díaz-Canel links the attack to “arms trade”

The president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, linked the incident to the arms trade and political violence in the United States: “The arms trade and the increase in political violence in the United States have led to incidents like this Saturday in that country.”

Billionaire Elon Musk took the opportunity to show his support for the Republican presidential candidate and called on people to vote for him in the next elections: “I fully support President Trump and I hope he gets well soon.”

Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner expressed solidarity with Trump, recalling her experience with political violence: “My full solidarity is with the former president of the United States and current candidate Donald Trump for the attack that took place a few hours ago in the state of Pennsylvania.”

Fernández de Kirchner was the victim of a botched attack on September 1, 2022, when a man tried to shoot her in the head while she was greeting her followers in front of her residence in the Recoleta neighborhood in Buenos Aires. The gun did not fire and the attacker was immediately taken into custody.

The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, regretted the incident and expressed her solidarity: “Violence generates more violence. I regret what is happening in the electoral process of the United States. My solidarity with Donald Trump.”

Finally, the Paraguayan government strongly condemned the attack and warned of its negative impact on the US electoral process: “We strongly condemn the attack on former President Donald Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania.”

Likewise, Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña rejected the aggression.

“I denounce all forms of violence,” Lacalle Pou expressed through a message on his X account, while Peña stressed: “We strongly condemn all acts of violence.”

From Chile, its Chancellor, Alberto Van Klaveren, wished the Republican candidate for president a speedy recovery. “We reject acts of violence that threaten democracy and tolerance,” the head of Chilean diplomacy stressed.
