Marathon, the sci-fi first-person shooter developed by Bungie, is available for free on Steam.
The first game in the trilogy was originally published for Apple Macintosh computers in 1994, followed by a sequel, Marathon 2: Durandal, in 1995, and the third installment, Marathon Infinity, in 1996. These games made the studio famous half a decade before they achieved huge success with Halo: Combat Evolved after an alliance with Microsoft.
The version found on Steam is called Marathon Classic and was developed by the team at Aleph One, a fan-made engine based on the Marathon 2 source code.
According to the studio, this allows us to offer “authentic gameplay using original data files,” as well as quality of life improvements such as widescreen support, 3D filtering, positional audio and interpolation at 60 frames per second or more, “at in case the original seems too authentic.” you.”
Bungie confirmed that later versions of Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity, developed by the Aleph One team, will also be published on Steam, but did not provide specific dates for this.
The reason for publishing these three classics on Valve’s digital distribution platform is, logically, the future launch of their reboot.
The new Marathon will arrive on current-gen consoles and PCs as a sci-fi PvP shooter next year, although it was originally planned for a late 2024 release.
