Cancer patients at Yekla Hospital will receive psychological and social support

The Murcia Health Service (SMS) has signed a new agreement with the Yecla Cancer Association (AYAC) to provide volunteer activities, psycho-oncological care and social care at the Virgen del Castillo de Yecla hospital. This aims to provide more comprehensive care that improves the quality of life and adherence to treatment for people with cancer.

The agreement establishes cooperation between SMS and the above-mentioned association through the center’s curators, carry out various volunteer activities aimed at providing comprehensive care for cancer patients admitted to this hospital and their families.

“In many cases, cancer requires constant long-term care, so the psychological and social impact that this situation entails on the family and environment, as well as the physical deterioration of the patient’s condition, can lead to various problems, especially social or relational ones,” he said . ” said SMS manager Isabel Ayala.

Scope is limited to the medical and medical-surgical services of the hospital centerbut the care will be extended to all cancer patients admitted to hospital and being treated for the problem, regardless of the department to which they are admitted.

Four different programs

AYAC will launch four different volunteer projects to adapt to the needs of patients who may be referred home if requested by the family or patient.

Thus, there is a “Psycho-Oncology Program” of specialized psychological support aimed at people suffering from cancer and their families, as well as a “Social Assistance Program” aimed at providing information about all the resources offered by the association to improve social integration. patient.

They will also develop a “Cancer Awareness and Prevention Program” that will provide general information about what cancer really is, how to demystify the disease and lifestyle habits that help prevent it, as well as a voluntary recall program that consists of volunteer support who have gone through the disease, which means sharing similar experiences that help the patient feel understood.

Volunteers will be properly trained and will always have the support of the medical professionals responsible for each case, as well as the hospital’s medical, nursing and social services.
