OpenAI will launch a search engine based on ChatGPT, which could put the AI company in direct competition with Google and influence the flow of Internet traffic for searching for news, sports scores and other types of information.
San Francisco-based OpenAI said Thursday it will launch the search feature for paid ChatGPT users, but will eventually expand it to all ChatGPT users. The company released a preview version to a small group of users and editors in July.
The original version of the text chatbot ChatGPT, released in 2022, was trained on huge volumes of online text, but could not answer questions about current events that were not in its training data.
Google has made big changes to its search engine in May, and AI-generated written resumes now frequently appear at the top of search results.
The purpose of summaries is to quickly answer a user’s query so that they don’t have to click on a link and go to another website for more information.
Google made the changes after a year of testing with a small group of users, but their use continued to produce false results, showing the risks of outsourcing information searches to artificially intelligent chatbots prone to making mistakes known as hallucinations.
The decision by artificial intelligence companies to force their chatbots to suggest news collected by professional journalists has alarmed some media outlets.
He New York Times is one of the media outlets suing OpenAI and its business partner Microsoft for copyright infringement. News Corp, owner of newspapers Wall Street Journal And New York Postin early October sued Perplexity, another artificial intelligence search engine.
OpenAI explained in a blog post Thursday that its new search engine was created with help from information industry partners including Associated Press and News Corp. It will include links to sources such as news and blogs, the company said.
At this time, it is unclear whether the links will correspond to the original source of the information presented by the chatbot.
