Cocaine, confrontations and the cartoon of a mouse: the traces of “Los Chapitos” in CDMX

Mexico City has also been the scene of the criminal activities of the Sinaloa Cartelin recent times more specifically of the factions led by the sons of “Chapo” Guzmán, better known as “Los Chapitos”.

One of the most relevant events last year that involved the criminal organization was the “historic” seizure of more than one and a half tons (1,680 kilos) of cocaine which was transported by two double-trailer trailers in the limits of the capital and the State of Mexico.

The authorities detained four alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel who were originally from the state of Durango, adjacent to Sinaloa.

Last July, the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) reported on the discovery of more than 60 synthetic drug production laboratories in Sinaloa, specifically in the capital, Culiacán, and the surrounding mountains.

That same month, on the afternoon of Tuesday the 12th, there was a confrontation between elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City and members of the Sinaloa Cartel. at kilometer 28.5 of the Mexico-Cuernavaca federal highway, in the town of San Miguel Topilejo, in the Tlalpan mayor’s office.

That day the authorities managed to arrest 14 people and rescue four more who were kidnapped in a building in the San Andrés Totoltepec neighborhood.

Elements of the SSC also secured 10 long gunsincluding a 50-caliber Barrett type rifle, a high-powered 7.62 by 51 machine gun, 12 40 mm caliber grenades.more than 70 useful cartridges, bulletproof vests, three short arms and drugs in unspecified quantities.

After the SSCCDMX reported on the arrest of the members of the criminal group, some photographs circulated in which it could be observed that some of the subjects were carrying plates with the image of a cartoon rodenta clear allusion to Ovid Guzman Lopez (son of Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán Loera), who is nicknamed as “The mouse”.

That same caricature was the one that was printed on several of the armored vehicles that remained as a record of the fray that took place last Thursday, January 5, in the Jesús María union, north of Culiacán, where the son of “El Chapo” He was arrested by elements of the army.

According to a version of the journalist Antonio Nieto, despite the fact that Ovidio was already one of the priority objectives of the Mexican Army and the US authorities, who offered a reward of 5 million dollars for information that led to his arrest, The son of “El Chapo” chose to move to the capital of the country to take refuge there for six months.

Ovidio lived near Culiacán, but supposedly lived in Mexico City for half a year in 2021. One of his favorite activities, according to said version, was to go to the Parque Delta shopping mall, located in the Benito Juárez mayor’s office, to taste some peculiar pastries in The Cheesecake Factory.

During that time, elements of the Navy were allegedly watching Ovidio at the Vermont Hotel and knew of his activities. But the real threat to the son of “El Chapo” was not the authorities, but a group of hitmen that he would have hired to assassinate him.

The report indicated that the hitmen would have been hired by Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada (one of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel that maintains a dispute with the sons of El Chapo) and Rafael Caro Quintero, through a lieutenant identified as “El Flaco” .

In this regard, Antonio Nieto indicated that “El Flaco” -whose name is Pablo Núñez- was a ringleader of the Arellano Félix family. He was the one who allegedly contacted five subjects to end Ovidio’s life while he was staying at CDMX in 2021, but they would have been stopped before they could achieve their goal.
