Compounds in Olives May Be Powerful for Weight Loss and Diabetes Control: Here’s the Recommended Daily Serving | Health | Journal

Olives are an ingredient that cannot be missing from Mediterranean cuisine, and in addition to being delicious, they are also healthy. They are rich in healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidants such as lutein, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin.

They also have laxative, satiating, hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties, explains Tua Saude.

Its star ingredient is elenolic acid, which helps prevent and control diseases and may be a miracle worker for fighting diabetes and losing weight.

Olive for weight loss and diabetes control

A recent study in rodents has shown that elenolic acid may be useful in lowering blood glucose levels and facilitating weight loss.

According to the Medical News website, scientists noticed that after a week of administering elenolic acid to obese diabetic mice, they not only lost weight, but also had improved glycemic regulation compared to a control group that did not receive the acid.

According to the health portal, the blood sugar-lowering effect of elenolic acid is comparable to that of liraglutide, an injectable diabetes drug, and superior to that of metformin, a common oral treatment for type 2 diabetes.

In terms of weight control, the researchers noted that elenolic acid stimulates the release of hormones such as GLP-1 and PYY, which induce feelings of fullness and help prevent overeating.

After four to five weeks of treatment, the mice showed a 10.7 percent reduction in obesity, and blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity were comparable to healthy, non-obese mice, according to NewsMedical.

However, the researchers point out that the concentration of elenolic acid present in olive oil and olives is insufficient, suggesting that the benefits noted in the study are unlikely to be achieved by consuming these foods alone.

How to Eat More Olives

Olives can be eaten alone as a snack or added to a variety of dishes, including cakes, salads, cod dishes, sauces, pates, breads, sandwiches and risottos. Even in the form of extra virgin olive oil.

To get the most out of olives, Toua Saude recommends limiting your intake to a handful or a quarter cup a day. This is enough to enjoy the flavor and nutritional benefits without overdoing it. (HEY)
