Spain and Lebanon urge ceasefire and condemn Israeli attacks against UN
The governments of Spain and Lebanon this Monday urged a permanent and immediate ceasefire that re-establishes Lebanon’s sovereignty over its territory. In addition, he has condemned the attacks against the United Nations troops in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the armed forces of this country. In a joint statement, both countries demanded that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 be fully implemented and the return of displaced people on both sides of the Blue Line to their homes be guaranteed.
Both governments also condemned attacks against medical personnel, health facilities, journalists and civilians and called for full respect for international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. The statement was made public by the Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, following talks with his Lebanese counterpart, within the framework of the meeting of the Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in Barcelona.
Albares said in an interview on RNE that there is a “danger” that Gaza could be completely destroyed and that it would no longer be possible to create a Palestinian state and that is why, on this platform, he would defend its urgency. Two-state solution. Along with a “realistic and viable” Palestinian state, he called on the entire international community to “take action on the matter” and sanction all those who “try to make it impossible” to resolve the two-state conflict.
Regarding tensions between Israel and Iran, he said he was concerned because the war is spreading regionally and that a confrontation between the two sides would “take us into the realm of the unimaginable, the unknown.” However, he also acknowledged that both countries are “very measured” about their response, although he warned that at any time either side could misinterpret the other’s actions “and everything “Could get out of hand.”
The minister is convinced that “there is nothing to indicate that Netanyahu is going to abandon his military efforts” and he does not expect the war to end soon, “all the more reason” – he stressed – to favor peace. To redouble efforts and establish a ceasefire.
The statement called for Spain and Lebanon to work together to stabilize the situation in the south of the country and establish lasting peace in the region. The Government of Spain reiterates its willingness to continue to contribute to alleviating the serious humanitarian crisis in the country and to strengthen support through Spanish cooperation, including by supporting the stabilization phase.
