UN Security Council shows its unanimous support for the blue helmets deployed in Lebanon

The United Nations Security Council this Monday night unanimously condemned Israeli attacks against targets of the United Nations Military Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which injured at least five blue helmets.

In a statement approved unanimously, the 15 Security Council member states urged parties – making reference to Israel and the Shia militia Hezbollah, without mentioning them – to respect the security of UNIFIL mission personnel and facilities. “United Nations troops and their facilities should never be targeted by attack,” the statement said, reiterating its importance for support for the mission and the stability of the region.

Similarly, the Council calls for the full implementation of Resolution 1701 of 2006, which establishes the conditions under which both Israel and Lebanon must respect the border between the two countries, the so-called Blue Line, in order to ensure peace in the region. Needed However, the Council recognizes “the need for additional practical measures to achieve that objective”, without specifying which ones.

The note said UNIFIL positions have been attacked 20 times since the start of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon on October 1, including by direct fire and an incident on Sunday in which two Israeli tanks broke the gates of a Blue Helmets base .

“Five peacekeepers have been injured in these incidents, including one who has been shot,” Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Monday. “The origin of that bullet has not been confirmed yet,” he said.

The Israeli government has repeatedly urged UN troops to withdraw from the area five kilometers beyond the Blue Line for their own safety. “The time has come for you to withdraw UNIFIL,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a letter to Guterres on Sunday. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of the UN peacekeeping mission, responded on Monday that the troops were not going anywhere. Lacroix will meet with Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon this Tuesday. On Monday he assured reporters that the United Nations was “constantly reviewing the situation, and we have contingency plans for all scenarios.” (Reuters)
