The percentage of people who die after a myocardial infarction—the fatality rate—remained stuck at 15% and has not decreased for 10 years, despite the fact that the incidence of this pathology has decreased. has been declining in recent decadesaccording to a study with data from the province of Girona.

Myocardial infarction is a pathology characterized by the death of a section of the heart muscle that occurs when a coronary artery is completely blocked.

Myocardial infarction rates are falling, but mortality is not improving

The research team analyzed data from 4,974,977 hospitalizations and 70,405 death certificates provided by the Program for Data Analysis for Research and Innovation in Health (PADRIS), all anonymous and from the province of Girona.

The study was conducted under the guidance REGIKOR Group – Girona Heart Registry – at the Research Institute of the Hospital del Mar, in collaboration with PADRIS.

The event was also attended by cardiologists from the same Del Mar Hospital and the Valencia Hospital, as well as primary care specialists and international experts, as well as from CIBER Cardiovascular Diseases (CIBERCV).

The findings, published in the Spanish Journal of Cardiology, show that mortality (the percentage of deaths 28 days after a heart attack) does not follow the same trend as incidence.

Thus number of myocardial infarctions per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence) and its forecast they have improved over the last thirty years in the province of Girona.

Sudden deaths fell from 40% to 15%, and survival among patients admitted to hospital increased to 95%.

Thus, the incidence of this pathology has continuously decreased between 1990 and 2019, at a rate of 1% per year among the population aged 35 to 74 years; On the other hand, the mortality rate has remained at 15% over the past decade.

“Despite efforts over the past 30 years to provide access to patients as quickly as possible as soon as they develop symptoms, there are factors that limit the health system’s ability to get patients to hospitals where their coronary artery can be repatented,” the company explained. . Del Mar Hospital researcher and cardiologist Helena Tison-Marcos.

These studies indicate a positive trend in mortality among women who have had a heart attack.

If 30 years ago the same REGICOR group found that they had a higher risk of death in the acute phase than men, despite the fact that the incidence was three times lower, now the difference has disappeared, so that both have a chance of survival genders are the same.

The study authors believe these findings are important for improving health care planning.

The researchers are already working on applying the algorithm to analyze the entire population of Catalonia and hope to continue analyzing trends over time.
