Digi agrees to continue to use Movistar’s mobile network in addition to its own coverage.

Telefonica announces preliminary agreement with Digi so that it can use its mobile network to complement its rollout of its own mobile frequencies in the coming years.

The Romanian operator is at a decisive moment in its career to become a full-fledged operator in Spain with its own infrastructure. In fixed-line communications, this has already happened thanks to the extensive fiber network deployed in recent years, and now it is the turn of the mobile network, which values ​​the 60 MHz obtained thanks to the frequencies that MásOrange had to get rid of in order to see its approved merger. . This spectrum, spread over two 4G bands and one for 5G, will enable it to maintain its own independent network in strategic locations to absorb traffic and reduce wholesale costs. Cellnex recently announced that it is already in talks with the operator about planning to deploy the network at its sites. However, as with Yoigo and its limited frequencies, it is necessary to have a network with large coverage covering the gaps in the rest of the territory.

The agreement with MásOrange entitles you to have the Orange network provide you with this additional coverage through roaming national, however this is an option that Digi is not required to use. The company is a full-fledged MVNO on the Movistar network, so it is best to continue with this coverage and use this opportunity as pressure to negotiate better terms with your regular provider.

Telefonica and Digi sign memorandum of understanding

Movistar now says an agreement in principle has already been reached for the Romanian operator’s customers to continue to be connected to its coverage beyond the third quarter of 2026, when the current agreement ends. In presenting its results for the first quarter of 2024, Telefonica announces the signing of a preliminary agreement in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, which, although not final, as it requires a final signature scheduled for the coming weeks, makes clear the intention of both companies to continue to be partners.

As evidence of the superior quality of our national network infrastructure and the confidence of our partners in our ability to deliver high-quality services through this infrastructure, we have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Digi for a long-term mobile network agreement. . Terms have been agreed in principle and we hope to conclude an agreement, subject to final documentation, in the coming weeks.

This preliminary contract would have already defined the terms and conditions that Digi would receive upon signing the final document. Although there was no official confirmation, the fact that Digi had access to 5G coverage before this announcement was already an indication that OMV had managed to improve the terms of its contract renewal with Movistar.
