Dr. Aguaron: “If we love women, we should worry about breast cancer, which affects them the most”

“The reality is very sad. Breast cancer is the cancer that most affects women. If we love and care for them, we will also have to worry about this disease.” This is how Dr. Jesús Aguaron, president of the Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Soria, spoke this Saturday on the occasion of World Cancer Day.

A doctor at an information desk set up on El Collado Street in the capital invited women to attend screening programs to detect this cancer, as well as learn how to perform monthly self-examinations so that if an abnormality is detected, “see a doctor soon to get a diagnosis.”

Science has advanced in treatment and survival rates now exceed 85%. Although the doctor applauded the data, he stressed the need for research into all types of cancer so that all cancer patients “have the same opportunity to live with the disease and receive adequate treatment.” The same thing happens with those tumor pathologies that are considered “rare” or have a very low survival rate, as well as with others that remain stagnant. “All those who suffer from them also have the right to be tested for their type of cancer,” he emphasized.

Around 35,000 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Spain in 2023, a figure “very important to consider”. In Soria, the incidence is not above average, but slightly below average.

The statistics, according to Aguaron, are due to various factors such as genetics, age and improved diagnosis, since previously this pathology was not detected because in many cases the victim died “and it was not known from what.” . With this argument, he stated that currently “there are more people, older people and more diagnoses.”

To defeat the disease, the fight requires that “the balance between survivors, new cases and deaths favor the former.” Despite this, he insisted on living a “reasonably healthy” lifestyle, avoiding obesity, sedentary behavior and remembering not to smoke, as tobacco, despite some voices to the contrary, “does have a link to breast cancer”.

The AECC in Soria takes to the streets several times throughout the year. Most of them are informative in nature, and only on the first Thursday in August is a fundraiser held to raise money for the investigation of this type of pathology. The association also raises funds through its lottery, which is conveniently certified electronically to avoid fraud.
