Dry eye treatment

05/21/2024

Treatment for dry eye will depend on its type, cause, and severity.

  • Application of moisturizers: treatment with artificial tears or preservative-free gels at appropriate frequency.
  • Occlusion of the tear ducts: In later stages, tear loss can be limited by blocking the tear ducts with plugs. Anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to improve the condition of the eyelids or treat the underlying systemic disease, if present.
  • SA or CFRP eye drops: Eye drops enriched with growth factors for cases with extensive ocular surface involvement.
  • Intense pulsed light or microexfoliation: activation of the meibomian glands using intense pulsed light or deep cleansing of the eyelids and eyelashes.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment

One of the most effective treatments for dry eye is IPL, which uses polychromatic pulsed light to activate the meibomian glands, which play an important role in the production of the lipid layer of tears. This easy process warms and cleanses the glands, facilitating the production and improving the quality of tears.

As a result, patients experience reduced irritation and itching, reduced redness, and improved vision clarity.

Our technology

Lumenis M22™ IPL with OPT™

6th Generation IPL uses the most advanced OPT™ and SapphireCool™ technologies and is 97% efficient, making it the most scientifically published intense pulsed light.

How is IPL treatment performed?

This is usually done in 4 sessions with an interval of 2-3 weeks between sessions. The number of sessions required may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s individual response to treatment.

  • The first lesson is 45 minutes. Subsequent sessions are 15 minutes long.
  • Painless treatment under local anesthesia.
  • No side effects.
  • Involves manual drainage of the meibomian glands in one session.

Results with Optima IPL

  • Stops the vicious circle of inflammation caused by dysfunction of the meibomian glands.
  • Occludes abnormal vessels, which helps maintain inflammation.
  • Reduces the level of pro-inflammatory mediators and inhibits the progression of inflammation.
  • It reduces the osmolarity of the tear film and therefore reduces inflammation on the surface of the eye.
  • Reduces the number of demodex mites and reduces the bacterial load.
  • Restores the morphology and functionality of the meibomian glands.
