Ending explained
2023 movie. ENEMYThe film, now streaming on Amazon Prime, stars two of Ireland’s best young actors, Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Unfortunately, the script for this sci-fi drama fails to convey a story worthy of the talents of Ronan and Mescal.
Adapted from the novel by award-winning writer Ian Reid (I’m thinking about ending things), who co-wrote the screenplay with director Garth Davis (a lion), takes place in the near future, when the Earth is dying and humans strive to colonize space. But this film is not about that at all. Despite strong performances from the cast, the script meanders through a formless narrative, culminating in the plot twist you’re likely to see. Still, ENEMY It’s also confusing sometimes.
Don’t worry, Decider is here to help. Read on to get complete information about ENEMY summary of the film’s plot and ENEMY Explanation of the ending of the film.
It’s 2065 and the earth is dying. A prolonged drought has dried out the land, and food and water are dwindling. Despite all this, married couple Hen (Ronan) and Junior (Mezcal) eke out a simple existence in a remote old farmhouse in the Midwest. Their marriage is turbulent: when we first meet Hen, she is crying in the shower. In a voiceover, Hen says, presumably about her husband: “He doesn’t see me anymore. “It’s as if he replaced me with someone else.”
That night, Junior wakes up to headlights shining in his face. The car that pulls into their driveway is a guest, Terrence (Aaron Pierre). Terrence works for the government’s OuterMore space settlement program, and he’s here to tell Junior that he’s been shortlisted for a space settlement. It quickly becomes clear that this is not mandatory; Junior was drafted. If he is elected, he will not leave forever, but will live in the settlement for several years. Terrence says the selection process will also take a year or so, and that Hen and Junior are expected to live normal lives until then.
Hen pulls away from Junior. One day, Junior tells Hen not to wear a certain shirt anymore because he says she wore it the day they met and he doesn’t want it to wear out. Hen asks what else Junior remembers about the day they met, and Junior says they were happy. After this conversation, Hen sleeps with Junior again and their relationship seems to improve.
A year later, Terrence returns. Junior was officially called into space. Terrence drops another bomb: While Junior is gone, he will be replaced by an AI robot that looks exactly like him to keep his wife company. To build this robot, Terrence will live with Hen and Junior for several weeks, interviewing and observing Junior. This will ensure the accuracy of the robot.
Hen seems oddly relieved that Junior is gone and begins cleaning the house. She discovers a bug that Junior is fascinated with. He refers to the bug as “the little guy” and wonders why it isn’t moving. While walking alone, Junior sees men burning a burn and runs towards the fire. He was knocked to the ground and injured his shoulder. When he came to, Terrence said his shoulder was being treated by a doctor. Junior starts talking to Hen about running away together.
Junior overhears Hen talking to Terrence. She says that she has always dreamed of life after this marriage and dreams of running away, leaving only a blank note for Junior.
You probably saw it coming: The Junior we’ve known throughout the film isn’t human. He a copy of the robot. The real Junior returns from his space mission and encounters his robot self. Terrence explains to the robot that “the only way to test your abilities and functioning at full capacity is to experience the opposite situation face-to-face.” Yes, sure. Terrence explains that the robot was brought there a year ago, and that it was activated that night when Terrence’s headlights woke him up.
The robot is clearly upset and calls for Hen. He insists his life is real. Hen is also upset and yells at Terrence and the others in the room – the people watching this experiment – that they are monsters going to hell. The Robot and the Chicken exchange the words “I love you.” Hen begs Terrence not to turn off the robot, but she is dragged away. Turning off the robot, Terrence says that he never thought that Hen would fall in love with the AI. In his last words, the robot sobs and promises Hen: “We’ll go somewhere else.”
Human Junior is upset that Hen “cheated” on him with a robot. Hen insists that it was not cheating and that she fell in love with Junior again through the robot. But this younger man is no longer the same. He is cold and distant. He has no interest in running away or going anywhere with Hen. But then a miracle happened: it began to rain, ending the long drought.
Hen happily starts dancing in the rain and tries to get Junior to join her. But he refuses. I have jokes for her. It seems at this moment that Hen realizes that she will not get back the version of Junior that she had with the robot. The next morning, Junior comes up and sees a blank note from Hen. Apparently she ran away, just like she told Terrence.
Terrence visits the farm after Hen leaves, but it is unclear what he is doing there. Later that night, Junior waits in vain for his wife to return home…and by some miracle, she does. Hen promises that she is here to stay.
But is it really Hen? Nope! Just like Junior the robot was distracted by a mistake, this version of Chicken reacts in the same way to a bug in the sink. What does it mean? This Chicken is a robot! The last shot of the film shows us that the real human Chicken is on the plane, and the robot that took her place is living with Junior. Terrence must have brought a new robot chicken while he was at their house. Now Human Hen must fulfill his dreams of exploration, and Human Junior must fulfill his dreams of standing still… with a robot. Everyone lives happily ever after. It seems, as it were, something like.
