Euskadi, the third community with the most cases of gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Navarre, in turn, is the second autonomous community with the highest number of chlamydia patients, with a rate of 124.97 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Sexually transmitted infections remain widespread, especially among young men, according to the latest annual report.

sexually transmitted infections (ITS) continue to grow in Hego Euskal Herria. Cases of the two STIs with the highest incidence – gonorrhea and chlamydia – have risen sharply, and Euskadi is the third autonomous community with the highest number of infections. More than 1,700 new cases were reported last year gonorrheawhich means your score has increased by 58% in the last two years. Only Catalonia and Madrid report more cases.

infections caused chlamydiaIn turn, the number of cases in the LHC has reached 2,300, and in the last two years alone it has increased by about 25%. Thus, the incidence rate of this disease has increased from 76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 102 in 2023. Catalonia is the community that experiences the highest number of infections of this type, and Navarre is in second place. Last year, 36,983 cases of chlamydia were diagnosed in the Foral community, up 20.7% from two years ago.

Cases of LGV (lymphogranuloma venereum) also continue to rise in Euskadi and Navarre. Catalonia was the community with the largest number of LGVs, followed by Madrid, Navarre and BAC.

This is evidenced by the surveillance report on these diseases published yesterday by the National Epidemiological Center of the Carlos III Health Institute, which already includes cleaned data for 2023.

It should be noted that in both the Basque Autonomous Community and the Foral Community there is male dominance compared to women: 80% of gonorrhea cases occurred in men, who also had 88% of syphilis cases and 98% of LGV cases. In the case of chlamydia, women occur in approximately half of the cases (46.6%).

There were differences by age by disease, with chlamydia being the most common infection in those under 25 years of age and LGV the least common.

According to experts, there may be several reasons for this increase, but they emphasize that minors are increasingly use condoms less and other barrier methods. This dangerous trend will be accompanied by other factors, such as an increase in the number of couples, an increasingly earlier initiation of sexual relations and the spread of casual contacts and risky practices.
