Chances are that if you regularly visit travel sites to find out what attractions you can’t miss during your vacation, you’ve noticed that many of them include personalized Google Maps that show these destinations or images to identify them. This is a very useful feature that you can recreate yourself to plan your trip in detail by adding markers or routes in the car that you can always access from your mobile phone.
The custom map feature in Google Maps is a bit hidden and can only be accessed via the My Maps website from a browser on your smartphone, tablet or computer. There is no dedicated mobile app. Once you sign in, you will need to sign in to your Google account (if you haven’t already) and click “Create a new map”: this will open a new page with a map that takes up the entire screen, except for the top left corner, where you will see an options box. Here you can give it a name and add a description.
One of the possibilities it includes is the creation of several layers (also called them) if you prefer to separate the types of markers; for example, one for monuments, another for restaurants… The most curious thing is that you can choose between nine different types of map: classic map, satellite view, relief, another political, more physical or specific, among others, with the names of cities.
From here, you will have to search one by one for the points you want to add to your personalized map; All changes will be saved automatically. This is easy to do: at the top of the screen there is a search engine in which you need to enter the name of points of interest that will automatically appear on the map, as well as add them and “send” them to the appropriate layer. In each, you can edit the name, select the appropriate icon, add an image or video, and finally get directions.
Maps are always available in the My Maps section of your browser, but that’s not ideal for travel—it’s best viewed on your mobile phone directly from the Google Maps app. In this case, they are “saved” in the “Saved” icon that appears in the bar at the bottom of the interface. The Maps icon is then selected where all the maps are displayed and when you select one it appears in full screen.
What if you want to share it? You can do that right from My Maps: each map preview has an arrow that lets you email it, share it on social media, or embed it on a website. On mobile, the option is in the menu that opens when you tap View Legend every time you open a map (it automatically appears at the bottom of the screen). The options are much broader here, as you can share it via text message, WhatsApp, etc.
