France: Extreme right wins first round of parliamentary elections according to preliminary data

The far-right National Rally party (RN, French acronym Rassemblement National) scored a historic victory in the first round of France’s parliamentary elections this Sunday, according to several exit polls.

According to survey data provided by France Television and Radio France after the elections ended, Marine Le Pen’s party RN received about 34% of the votes.

The left-wing New Popular Front coalition reached almost 29% of the vote. And President Macron’s coalition, Ensemble, won about 20%.

Once the first results were known, Le Pen addressed her supporters.
