Free course on sexually transmitted diseases

The Avila College of Nursing is launching a new free online course aimed at the general population to learn prevention strategies, effective detection methods and current treatment options for sexually transmitted diseases.

The training will be based on audio-visual content and after completing the “serious game” the student will receive a certificate of completion issued by the Avila College of Nursing.

According to the aforementioned college, the number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has increased in Spain over the past year: 42.6% of gonococcal infections and 24.1% of syphilis cases between 2021 and 2023, according to the published report “Epidemiological Surveillance of Sexual Infections” way.” Transmitted infections in Spain, 2023,” published on October 21 by the National Epidemiological Center of the Carlos III Institute of Public Health (ISCIII).

Specifically, 34,403 cases of gonococcal infection were reported in 2023, compared to 16,115 in 2001 and 25,449 in 2022. For syphilis, 10,879 cases were confirmed in 2023, compared to 6,841 in 2021 and 8,531 in 2022.

An increase in the incidence of chlamydia was also noticeable between 2016 and 2023, with an annual increase of 20.7%. There were 36,983 cases reported in 2023, up from 7,239 in 2016.

Taking this into account, the Avila College of Nursing will launch a free course on November 21, aimed at the general population, entitled “Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs); Prevention, Detection and Treatment” to gain skills to combat these infections from a community perspective, improving public health and people’s well-being.

The development of the course will be led by professional Marta Rebanal Gago. According to Carlos Valdespina, nurse and director of SalusPlay, “Students in this course will have a PDF manual, 12 videos, and a podcast. Such training based on short-term audiovisual “pills” contributes to the retention of knowledge,” the expert emphasizes.

The course is aimed at all people over 18 years of age. Persons between the ages of 14 and 18 may register with the consent of their parents or guardians.
