General Hospital of Valencia and Saguntum introduces a new surgical technique for the treatment of morbid obesity

VALENCIA, June 2. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Two public health network hospitals, the Central Hospital of Valencia and the Hospital Sagunta, have added a new bariatric surgery technique to their portfolio of services for the treatment of morbid obesity. This is the SADI-S technique, single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy, or also called duodenal-to-laparoscopic loop switch, which offers great benefits to the patient as it has fewer side effects than more complex and aggressive surgeries.

In addition, with regard to complex or more aggressive methods, this represents another great advantage for the patient, since after the intervention it is not only possible to lose weight, but with this technique the likelihood of regaining weight can be reduced and this prevents possible obesity-related diseases , the Generalitat said in a statement.

The intervention consists of performing a vertical gastrectomy, that is, cutting and removing part of the stomach, which reduces the body’s absorption of nutrients. Subsequently, a duodeno-ileal anastomosis is performed laparoscopically, which consists of surgically connecting the duodenum to the small intestine while preserving the common canal.

This procedure, indicated for severely obese patients, has better mid- to long-term results than bypass surgery and offers advantages over duodenal switch because, in addition to reducing surgical time, it reduces the likelihood of leakage. and prevents the opening of the mesentery and the likelihood of developing internal hernias after it.

At the General Hospital of Valencia, this first intervention was carried out by the head of the functional obesity department, Cristina Sancho, a bariatric surgeon accredited by the Spanish Society of Obesity Surgery. As Sancho explained, “performing a single anastomosis involves reducing surgical time and postoperative complications such as bile reflux or internal hernias.”

“When it is done laparoscopically, through small incisions, the scars are smaller, the pain is reduced, recovery is faster and the patient stays in the hospital for less time,” Dr. Sancho added.

On the other hand, the head of the department of esophagogastric surgery, Carlos Redondo, explained that although this method has many advantages, “it is not a method free of complications, so it should always be performed in a protocolized manner using multidisciplinary teams.” and in centers with experience in bariatric and metabolic surgery, such as our hospital.

In fact, the department of functional obesity involves endocrinologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, pulmonologists, plastic surgeons and digestive surgeons.

FIRST OPERATION AT SAGUNT HOSPITAL

At the Saguntum Hospital, this operation was successfully carried out this month by the persons in charge of the Bariatric Surgery Department, Dr. Andres Frangi and Dr. Rodolfo Rodriguez, under the guidance of Dr. Javier Osorio from the Barcelona Clinic and expert. technology, which represents great progress for this hospital.

The Bariatric Surgery Department of Saguntum Hospital has developed “remarkably” in terms of infrastructure and specialized staff since its inception in 2017, achieving great successes in the specialty such as the introduction of 3D laparoscopic surgery and the update of the ISO 9001 standard updated three years ago: Certification 2015, guaranteeing the quality of management processes.

By treating more than 600 patients and performing 320 surgeries, the department has had a “significant” impact on reducing the prevalence of obesity and related diseases in the region.

The coordinator of the Department of Nutrition, Metabolic Surgery and Obesity Surgery of the Sagunt Hospital, Andres Frangi, emphasized that “the main goal of the department is to comply with the quality standards of the Spanish Society of Obesity Surgery. Implementing an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of obesity and ensuring safe and high-quality surgical intervention.

“We are very pleased with the results obtained, but we want to continue to move forward because the Sagunta Health Department is at the forefront in the field of surgical techniques for bariatric surgery and we want to go further,” said the coordinator.

ROBOTIC BARIATRIC SURGERY

On the other hand, the Central Hospital of Valencia has also started treating obesity with robotic bariatric surgery using the Da Vinci robot. This method provides high precision thanks to 3D vision that helps the surgeon identify anatomical structures during surgery, as well as robotic arms that can move in angles and directions, allowing the surgeon to reach all areas in a safer and more controlled manner.

Robotic bariatric surgery improves outcomes, reduces postoperative pain, allows for rapid patient mobilization, and reduces the risk of postoperative complications.

The General and Digestive Surgery Service of the General Hospital annually performs an average of 4,000 operations, including urgent and planned ones, of which 70-80 operations are intended for the treatment of obesity.

These methods are especially indicated for patients with severe excess weight, known as morbid obesity. This condition is associated with the development of complications that can be life-threatening, such as hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease, among others.
