GOG has a program for saving them (and it already includes more than 100 titles)

Research from the Video Game History Foundation shows that 87% classic games those released in the United States are at risk of disappearance. This is a reality that extends beyond the North American nation. Many games we played years ago are no longer available, and others seem to have suffered the same fate.

GOG, a video game distribution platform that competes with Steam and the Epic Games Store, has launched an initiative to address this situation. It’s a classic title saver that promises that hundreds of titles will remain compatible with modern systems even if their developers decide to forget them.

GOG and its initiative to preserve classic video games

Company warrants that if a game is part of its Program, it will use its own resources to ensure compatibility over time. This initiative now available with 100 titles among which we can find “Diablo: Hellfire”, “Heroes of Might and Magic” and the “Resident Evil” set. Prices for these games range from $4.99 to $12.49.

So how do we find games from a program that promises to save them? Essentially, we have two alternatives. The first is to study the program’s own page. The second is to use the “Good Old Games” filter in the right panel to filter results on the store’s home page. The included games will be labeled “Good Old Games” as we can see in the screenshot.

GOG says that it will work to include more games in its program in the future and that the added game should not disappear. It should be noted that compatibility is currently limited for Windows PC Users. There are no plans to expand it to macOS and Linux, so users on those platforms won’t be able to take advantage of the service.

Other players in the industry are also working to preserve video games. Microsoft, for example, wants to continue to rely on backward compatibility for its Xbox consoles. We also find initiatives such as that of the National Library of Spain, which helps preserve thousands of jewels.
