Government promises to fix MOVES plan in 2025, but producers and consumers are already fed up

Late last year, the government committed to addressing the main problem with the MOVES III plan to help buy electric vehicles: long waiting time that buyers must suffer until they receive the appropriate subsidy, since in most cases it takes one to two years to collect it.

Despite the promises of recent months and the ultimatum of Wayne Griffiths’ recent resignation as President ANFAC (Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers)Last Tuesday, the executive decided to extend MOVES III in its current form until the end of the year, a decision that was met with disbelief across the sector.

Several manufacturers have decided to take action on the issue: Renault is up-fronting the aid to customers who finance their purchase through Mobilize Financial Services, something both Hyundai and MG have been doing for some time; in addition, In the last few hours, Stellantis said it would also take a similar measure..

Despite widespread dissatisfaction and very low sales of electric vehicles in Spain, which not only ranks at the bottom of Europe but is also down compared to last year, the government is taking it in stride. And that’s what has no plans to “fix” the MOVES plan until next yearsomething completely unprecedented in the current situation.

Spain is doomed to remain at the tail end of Europe

Reportedly Automobile Tribune, Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility José Antonio Santano Claverostated that the sector’s needs will be met by 2025. “Various ministries, led by Moncloa, are considering ensuring that by 2025 the MOVES plan, which targets electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and chargers, includes changes to the aid system.” Santano also acknowledged that help must reach the user immediately, and this “This can probably be achieved through dealers”.

Do we believe this? Considering that in November 2023 then acting Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism Héctor Gómezhave already announced the adoption of this measure, at the moment we are skeptical. “We know that the MOVES plan has its strengths and weaknesses. From a temporary perspective, making the assistance more flexible so that it is collected when you buy a car is a step we are going to take, it is a commitment.”

. A commitment that, more than six months later, came to nothing.
