The director is working on the adaptation of the classic ‘Frankenstein’, they assure that they are already in talks
Guillermo del Toro will write and direct a new film for Netflix based on writer Mary Shelley’s iconic gothic novel, Frankenstein, and is already in talks with Andrew Garfield to star in it.
Actors Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth are also among the leads, according to Deadline, but whether their focus will be based on period cinematography or set in modern times and what role each of the actors will play is unknown yet.
In 2022, Andrew Garfield was nominated for Emmys and SAG Awards for his performance in the miniseries Under Heaven’s Mandate, as well as reviving as Spider-Man in No Way Home alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.
While Oscar Isaac was also nominated for an Emmy for Scenes From a Marriage and received the Saturn Award for his leading role in the Marvel series Moon Knight.
Mia Goth became an immediate cult figure thanks to her performance in the horror films Pearl and X.
Guillermo del Toro’s next film is said to start production in June of this year and is likely to be a new collaboration with Netflix, although it has not been officially confirmed.
The adaptation of Frankenstein would not be the first story developed in a gothic setting by the director of films Pinocchio, The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth and Chronos, since in 2015 he directed Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Jessica Chastain in Scarlet Peak , a film that mixes drama, horror, fantasy and suspense, and that takes place at the end of the 19th century in New York.
The story of Frankenstein is one of the most times that has been brought to the screen in Hollywood, one of the most outstanding is the version starring Boris Karloff from 1931 and which is an all-time classic.
There is also Frankenstein with Robert De Niro and Kenneth Branagh, directed by the latter in 1994; Young Frankenstein, from 1974, a comedy version with Gene Wilder, as Dr. Frederik Frankenstein; or I, Frankenstein with Aaron Eckhart, who in 2014 brought the creature to the present day.
