United Nations (EFE).- The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, was “deeply concerned” this Sunday about reports of North Korean troops being transferred to Russia and then deployed to the front lines in Ukraine.
“This could represent a very dangerous expansion of the war in Ukraine,” Guterres said in a statement released today. “Every effort must be made to prevent the internationalization of the conflict,” he said.
Yesterday, Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR) assured that Russia has already transferred more than 7,000 North Korean troops to areas near the border with Ukraine in the last week of October.
GUR revealed on its Telegram channel that North Korean soldiers were transported from training camps in eastern Russia with the help of at least 28 military aircraft – at least 5 of which are from Russia.
The soldiers were equipped by Russia with mortars, AK-12 assault rifles, several machine guns, sniper rifles and anti-tank weapons. According to GUR, they also received some sighting equipment, thermal imaging cameras, scopes and binoculars.
Andrey Yermak, head of the presidential office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, responded, “It is quite surprising that the world turns a blind eye to North Korea’s increasingly aggressive actions.”
Zelensky said on Friday night, before calling on Ukraine’s allies to take action rather than “wait”, Ukraine has detected all the sites where Russia is storing North Korean troops and would cooperate with its Western allies if it were to do so. If permission is granted, he can carry out pre-emptive attacks against them. To launch an attack on Ukraine by North Korean troops.
The move to transfer North Korean troops to Russia to fight in Ukraine was first warned by the US – which put the number of mobilized troops at 10,000 – and then confirmed by South Korea through its own sources.
