Health is committed to early diagnosis and awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Government of Andalusia has assessed the new strategy to combat Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative dementias. This comprehensive plan, prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Integration and the Andalusian Confederation of Alzheimer’s Disease, aims to improve the quality of life of those affected, their families and caregivers.

Neurodegenerative dementia affects memory and cognitive functions, and impairs self-esteem and independence. It causes great concern among family members and caregivers due to the progressive loss of self-sufficiency. According to the Council, there are about 800,000 people living with dementia in Spain, 120,000 of whom live in Andalusia.

Dementia is a global health priority. WHO recommends national action plans. Every year, 150 to 200 new cases of presenile Alzheimer’s disease are diagnosed in people under 65 years of age. The number of people affected is expected to double every 20 years, so early diagnosis is essential.

Planning and goals

The Comprehensive Plan to Combat Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias in Andalusia aims to address these shortcomings through a comprehensive collaborative strategy. The plan includes a situation analysis, operational planning and the establishment of evaluation indicators. Strategic directions include promoting cognitive health, social awareness, and improving care and care coordination.

The new strategy will also support caregivers by creating protocols to prevent disappearances and promote good treatment and intersectoral coordination. Training and research in dementia will support the development of professional skills and new treatment tools.

Among the specific measures, the Alzheimer Line stands out, offering 24-hour telephone information and early detection of cognitive impairment through specific biomarkers. In addition, an information campaign on early detection will be launched. In this way, the Andalusian government aims to improve care and treatment, as well as raise public awareness of the importance of early diagnosis.
