Hezbollah attacks military base near Israeli city of Haifa – DW – 10/07/2024

Hezbollah claimed on Sunday (06/10/2024) that it targeted an Israeli military base near Haifa, northern Israel’s largest city, for the third time during the day, after two explosive drone attacks targeted another base in the area Made.

Lebanon’s Iran-backed movement said in a statement that it “rebuked the rocket Fadi 1 Against the Carmel base, south of Haifa” and he dedicated it to its leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated in an Israeli bombing south of the Lebanese capital Beirut in late September 2024.

For its part, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed a Hezbollah attack with a “swarm of drones”, injuring six people. The IDF posted a video (earlier) on its X account Twitter

) where it showed losses.

The day’s attacks, which also included reported Israeli bombings against targets in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, came on the eve of the anniversary of a Hamas terrorist attack against Israeli territory, which triggered a military offensive by the Israeli state in Gaza . Due to which more than 40,000 deaths have occurred and 97,000 people have been injured.

Since the conflict spread to Lebanon, Israeli bombardment has killed more than 2,000 people and displaced 1.2 million.

UN considers Israeli actions in Lebanon “dangerous”

For its part, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) warned on Sunday that Israel’s military action near one of its positions is “extremely dangerous” and compromises its security.

“UNIFIL is deeply concerned about the recent activities of the Israeli military in Mission Position 6-52, south-east of Marun al Ras,” it said in a statement. “They are extremely dangerous,” the unit said. Israel launched a ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on 30 September.

“It is unacceptable that the security of United Nations peacekeeping forces is at risk,” UNIFIL said, reminding “all actors” of the obligation to protect UN personnel and assets.

A day earlier, UNIFIL announced it was “maintaining its positions”, despite requests by the Israeli military to “relocate” some of them. He also “urged Lebanon and Israel to implement Security Council Resolution 1701.” The proposal – which was approved at the end of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah – stipulates that only peacekeeping forces and the Lebanese Army would be deployed in southern Lebanon, between Israel and the border along the Litani River.

It also provides for the withdrawal of non-state armed forces, i.e. Hezbollah, which has maintained a presence in the south of the country since the end of the above-mentioned war. Despite this resolution, the Islamic Movement has maintained a presence in the south of the country since 2006, where approximately 10,000 blue helmets are deployed.
