High Performance Mode is available on MacBook Pro and Mac mini with the M4 Pro chip.

This mode allows your Mac to work harder.

High performance mode is now available on devices with M4 Pro chip

The emergence of new MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac with M4 chips has led to Expanded support for High Performance Mode on M4 Pro chip configurations on Mac mini and MacBook Pro.. Until now, High Performance Mode was only available on the 16-inch MacBook Pro in the M1 and M2 chip versions.

With the release of the M3 Max chip in 2023, Apple introduced High Performance Mode on the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Now that Apple Silicon M4 chips have arrived, this functionality will be present in more devices.

What is High Performance Mode?

Apple Mac computers run in silent mode by default to ensure balance between energy consumption and performance devices. While Low Performance Mode is designed to improve your Mac’s battery life, High Performance Mode Maximizes hardware power for more intensive tasks and allows fans to run at higher speeds.

High Performance mode can improve performance in graphics-intensive workflows such as 8K ProRes 4444 color grading and 8K DNxHR video. With High Performance mode, you can achieve smoother playback and faster export in video editing and 3D applications.

How to Activate High Performance Mode on Mac

If you need to enhance your workflow and improve the performance of your Mac, you can access PC performance mode by following the instructions detailed below. This is a particularly useful feature in services such as video editing.

  • Click the Apple logo  in the menu bar.
  • Access to section System Settings.
  • Click on a section Battery.
  • Select mode High consumption to start high performance mode.

As a reminder, High Performance Mode is only available on the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 and M2 chip, on computers with the M3 Max chip, and now on Mac mini and MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip.

High Performance Mode for Mac has a small trade-off

The first tests have already begun with the high performance mode for Macs with M4 Pro processors, with a slight disappointment in the Mac mini.

In our testing with a Mac mini, any performance gain when using High Performance mode was virtually unnoticeable and so small that we didn’t bother plotting graphs to show the difference.

The M4 Pro Mac mini chip apparently runs in high performance mode for slightly increase the graphics power of the GPUbut CPU tests didn’t show any improvement. In addition, the fan noise has increased significantly. Therefore, they recommend using High Performance mode only if you intend to use your Mac mini for long hours.
