How to disable Google search AI

It’s been quite some time since Google decided to take a step forward in its pursuit of generative artificial intelligence and integrate this technology into its flagship: search. When this functionality was announced, the company called it SGE, that is, Search Generative Experience.

To greatly simplify it, it works similar to Microsoft’s Bing Chat offering. The language model is responsible for this (in the case of Bing, it is almost identical to ChatGPT). provide answers to user requests. It does this by generating text based on various sources, either through previous learning or through real-time search.

language models In some contexts this is an unreliable technology., especially for general use such as Internet searches. Like any neural network, it is difficult to predict what answer it will come up with and whether it will be appropriate. We must also remember that despite the use of the term “artificial intelligence”, these algorithms do not understand what they read or what they write.

Therefore, quite grotesque situations arise. That’s what happened to user Peter Young, who was offered a casting call. stick pizza in the AI-generated summary, a response from a Reddit user who was actually joking. At this point, Google has managed to fill online forums with users asking how to turn off AI reviews.

AI searches are still available to few people

Google has decided to implement AI-generated responses by default. In Spain we still don’t see this type of personalized content, but in the US it is already being viewed. They even appear even if they haven’t signed up for the Search Labs experiment. So it seems the idea is that this functionality will gradually roll out to all users.

At the moment in our market it is necessary to use a VPN (it can be a free VPN), which will make it easier for you connection from a server located in the USA. So, if the answers do not appear by default, they need to be activated from the Search Labs section.

From now on, on some issues AI-generated summaries appear. In addition to being signed in from the US, your account must be a personal account and not a professional Workspace account.

When it comes to Google’s AI-generated results, there are several reasons why they were enabled on your account. There are also reasons why you are still not seeing this type of content. Here are the possibilities, according to the experience of some users:

  • If you are in an unsupported market. For example, in Spain you should not see content created by artificial intelligence. The only thing that appears when you search are the famous knowledge blocks, where information related to the query you made appears.
  • If you have enabled this feature in Search Labs. In this case, it’s best to go back to Search Labs and disable this feature to prevent the AI from generating its own results.
  • If they just showed up. Many users are complaining that AI bulletins have just appeared on their account. And the worst thing in this case is that there is no way to deactivate them, at least in a simple way.

If the AI results bother you, then you can try one of the two methods we suggest below.

Use web filter manually

The web filter limits results to sites on the Internet only. Thus, the user can completely disable any AI-generated content and even Google knowledge blocks.

The only thing you have to do to activate it is press the button Further and select Internet, as shown in the image above. By doing this, you will get “clean” results, free of elements that are usually superfluous.

In fact, we highlight the idea that in addition to deactivating results using AI, you’re going to eliminate knowledge blocks. Here’s a search for Barcelona without the web filter enabled:

And here is one with the web filter activated:

Without a doubt, this latter format is less chaotic.

Set your browser’s search engine to always use the web filter.

Another possibility is to convert the previous method, i.e. Google search with web filter enabled, into default search engine in your browser. Using Chrome as a model, just follow a few very simple steps.

If you are using a different browser, the idea is the same: you must create a new search engine and set it as default. Here’s how we did it in Chrome:

  1. Go to Chrome settings and click Seeker.
  2. Then click the button Managing search engines and site search.
  3. In chapter Site searchPress Add.
  4. In a pop-up window, in a field Namewrite something like Google Internet.
  5. In the shortcut enter Google is
  6. Finally, this code is entered into the last field: {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s
  7. Save your changes and notice that you have a new search engine in this section. Click on the three vertical dots and select the option Select as default.

From the moment you do a search on the Internet from the navigation bar, the results returned by Google will always have the web filter enabled. This way, no knowledge blocks or AI-generated summaries will appear.

On mobile devices, you can do the same thing if your favorite browser allows you to create new search engines. For example, on Android, Chrome allows you to change the default search engine, but not create a new one.

On the contrary, as you can see in the image above, in Firefox for Android Yes, you can add new motors, so this trick will be quite workable.

For Microsoft, switching to this new technology and integrating it into its search engine was an easy task. Bing’s market share is negligible compared to its competitor’s. But for Google, its most valuable product, its search engine, start acting crazy This can cause deep reputational damage. At the moment, many are wondering how to disable AI-generated reports. It looks like not everyone is happy with this change.
