In Aragon, over the past decade, a progressive increase in the incidence of gonococcal infection has been recorded.

The General Directorate of Public Health has summarized the cases of infection. gonococcal infection in Aragon from 2004 to 2023 and it is observed that the incidence has increased over these two decades.

This is reflected in the information updated this Thursday in the Epidemiological Bulletin of Aragon, which presents data on gonorrhea, sexually transmitted infection (STIs) caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This represents a serious public health problem both in its scope and in its complications and consequences if the early diagnosis and treatment necessary to break the chain of transmission are not provided. It can lead to complications during pregnancy, infertility, genital cancer, and can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth.

As can be seen from the report, Over the past 20 years, there has been a progressive increase in the incidence of gonococcal infection.. In 2023, Aragon recorded 31.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. By age and gender, the incidence in men was higher than in women in all age groups. The highest rates in men were observed in those aged 20 to 24 years (248.2 cases per 100,000), followed by the 25-29 year group (216.3 cases per 100,000). In women, the highest rates were observed among those aged 20 to 24 years (96.6 cases per 100,000), followed by those aged 15 to 19 years (54.8 cases per 100,000).

On the other hand, the Epidemiological Bulletin of Aragon, corresponding to week 19 (6 to 12 May), reports that among diseases with low incidence, suspected iatrogenic botulism and case imported dengue feverboth in the province of Zaragoza.

Regarding the surveillance of respiratory infections in Aragon, data provided evolution of influenza. In particular, in the 19th week, the incidence of influenza recorded in primary health care institutions was 6.3 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, which is below the baseline threshold set for the season of 59.6. There were 11 emergency cases of influenza in public hospitals, representing 0.1% of the total number of visits to these services.
