India – Indian President instructs Modi to form government before inauguration on Sunday – Spain

India’s President Draupadi Murmu this Friday entrusted the country’s Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi with the task of forming a government following his victory in the legislative elections that ended on June 4, which meant a serious setback for his government, which faces a historic third term with the need to start coalition talks for the first time.

“The President has appointed me as the Prime Minister-elect and I have informed him that the swearing-in will take place on Sunday,” Modi announced on Friday after a meeting at the Presidential Palace, the presidential palace in New Delhi.

Modi said he intended to submit to the president “a full list of his Council of Ministers before the ceremony”, The Hindu reported.

Modi’s party, the Indian People’s Party or Bharatiya Janata (BJP), won only 240 seats in the lower house of parliament and needs 53 additional seats from his supporting coalition, the National Democratic Alliance, to secure a majority.

In this scenario, Modi urgently needs his alliance partners to run the new government and that is why the contacts have already begun to set up this council of ministers.

Modi’s BJP may be forced to tone down some of its ultra-nationalistic rhetoric to reach a consensus with the rest of the parties, resulting in a fragile coalition with which it will be difficult to carry out ambitious economic reforms and continue to boost growth.
