Israel again attacks UN peacekeeping mission deployed in southern Lebanon, wounding two

For the second consecutive day, the Israeli army has again directly attacked the bases of the United Nations peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, deployed in southern Lebanon. As a UN source told the Reuters agency, the attack took place in Nakoura, where the headquarters is located, and two ‘blue helmets’ were injured. As the Defense Ministry confirmed to elDiario.es, there are no Spaniards among the injured.

The attack took place on an observation tower and Lebanese media indicated that the injured were from the Sri Lankan contingent.

On Thursday, Israeli troops fired on several international mission targets and two Blue Helmets were also injured when they fell from an observation tower at the Nakoura base.

Israel, through its UN ambassador, said that its “recommendation” is that the peacekeeping forces move five kilometers north “to avoid danger if fighting intensifies” and that “the situation along the Blue Line is unstable as a result of Hezbollah’s aggression.” Has been made.”

Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN deputy secretary-general for peacekeeping operations, told the Security Council on Thursday that the mission’s troops remained in their positions “in line with the mandate provided by the Council”. “The safety of peacekeepers is under constant threat. These actions show little respect for the protection that international law provides for UN facilities and personnel. “We have expressed our strong protest to the Israeli authorities,” he said. Lacroix condemned that both Israeli forces and Hezbollah have established positions near UN facilities.

The army issued a statement on Thursday accusing Hezbollah of operating “within and adjacent to civilian areas”, including “areas close to UNIFIL positions”, and said its forces maintained regular communications with the UN mission. Keeps.
