Jennifer Connelly recalls the sheer “panic” she felt when accepting her first and only Oscar for the 2001 film. Wonderful mind.
The actress appeared today in the morning edition of the program The Drew Barrymore Show where host Drew Barrymore asked her how it felt to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
“Complete closure. Like, panic,” Connelly said. “I was so nervous and depressed.”
She continued: “I remember looking out at the audience full of all these incredible people, and then I just saw that, say, 40 seconds had passed – you know, because there’s a monitor that tells you how long you have to talk. “I saw it and I think it was just… complete shock.”
Connelly recalled “swimming” and “gliding” through the evening, adding: “I went there with my dad. He came with me, which was special for me, so he tied me in somehow.”
Oscar wasn’t the only good gift Wonderful mind. Connelly also met her husband Paul Bettany while filming the drama.
“We didn’t actually spend a lot of time together on set until the very end of the movie, where I can’t remember what happened, but we were in Princeton, spending the evening with a group of people, and we both kind of went, ‘Oh.’ Hello,” she said to Barrymore.
Connelly continued: “We spend very little time together at the very end. But I was with someone else, and he was with someone else. So nothing happened.”
The star, who was living in the West Village with her son at the time, later reunited with Bettany after 9/11. By this point, they both ended their relationship.
“Paul was in Italy and he said he became obsessed with trying to contact me and see if I was okay,” she explained. “He called but couldn’t get through. He couldn’t stop trying to contact me and said, “Oh, I know what that means.” And finally he got through and said: “We need to see each other.” We need to come together.”
The couple tied the knot within a year and have since been married for 21 years.
