Health authorities Pakistan reported a sixth case polio In 2024, the country’s last case of polio occurred in the Qilla Abdullah district of Balochistan. This is the fifth case in the district this year. This is the second polio case in Qilla Abdullah to date.
The National Institutes of Health’s Polio Regional Reference Laboratory said it had been detected wild poliovirus type 1 (DPV1) in stool samples collected from a 1.5-year-old child at Gulistan Union Council 2, Killa Abdullah.
On June 3, the injured child developed symptoms of leg paralysis. Genetic sequencing of the virus isolated from the samples showed that it is genetically related to the YB3A genetic cluster of WPV1, which was found in all positive cases and in environmental samples this year.
The government is working to strengthen systematic vaccination rates and health systems in the province.
Poliovirus has been detected in environmental samples in more than 40 districts this year. Balochistan is the largest province by area, accounting for about 44% of Pakistan’s land area, although it is the least populated.
