One case of infection has been registered Oropush virus from an Italian traveler returning from Cuba.
The patient, a 26-year-old woman with no relevant medical history, visited Ciego de Avila, Cuba, from May 12 to May 26, 2024, as a VFR (visiting friends and relatives). Upon returning to Italy on May 26, he developed symptoms including diarrhea, malaise, high fever, severe headache and nausea during the return flight. He also experienced arthralgias and retro-orbital pain. No rash or rash was observed.
Leukopenia (lymphopenia) was detected and dengue fever was initially suspected. However, rapid tests for dengue (NS1 antigen, IgM, IgG antibodies) were negative, and RT-PCR for dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses (in blood and urine) was also negative.
The patient reported that similar symptoms were observed in her relatives in Cuba, where there is currently an outbreak of the Oropush virus infection. Oropouche virus (OROV)-specific RT-PCR was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of Oropouche virus infection.
