In an intimate reveal on the SHE MD podcast on Tuesday, Khloe Kardashian opened up about her deeply personal surrogacy journey and the unique challenges she faced welcoming her son Tatum in July 2022.
In a conversation with Dr. Thais Aliabadi, her trusted physician and podcast co-host, the 39-year-old Good American founder spoke candidly about the emotional challenges of miscarriage and the unexpected challenges that derailed her plans.
Khloe, who already has daughter True with her ex Tristan Thompson, has been going through a difficult time when she decided to expand her family through surrogacy. “I didn’t carry him, I didn’t really feel anything,” she admitted, emphasizing that the withdrawal began even before Tatum was born.
This feeling was exacerbated by personal upheaval in early December. “And then, in the first week of December, I found out that my ex was actually having a baby with someone else,” she said, a revelation that led her to decide to keep the surrogacy a secret until it happened. will become the most painful.
As the reality of her impending motherhood became public knowledge, Chloe faced intense media and social media scrutiny. “It devastated me because that’s when all the judgment and knives were thrown at me,” she recalled, detailing the emotional toll it took on her at such a vulnerable time.
Amid these challenges, Khloe planned a special Mommy and Me trip with True, hoping for a few last moments of one-on-one time before welcoming her son.
However, her plans were suddenly interrupted when Dr. Aliabadi informed her that Tatum would have to be delivered earlier than expected.
“The baby wasn’t due for another week or two and it was my last weekend with my daughter True. I just needed a weekend,” Khloe explained, sharing the panic and chaos that ensued as she struggled to maintain composure and motherhood. .
In a moment of overwhelming anxiety and an insistent desire to spend the weekend with True, Khloe broke down, leading to an unusual proposal from Dr. Aliabadi. “She says, ‘You know what? I will give birth to a child. I will take the child, and you will let me know when you are ready to take him.”
Chloe said she was amazed at the compassion shown by her doctor at such a critical time. The gesture allowed Khloe to accept the reality of the situation, and her sister Kim Kardashian’s surrogacy experience provided additional comfort and perspective.
Naming her son Tatum also turned out to be a second thought for Khloe. Known for her family’s penchant for unique names, she wanted something special without being too unconventional.
“I like unique names, but not original names,” she explained, noting that it took her about eight months to officially name him. During this time, she affectionately called him “Daddy,” a nickname that helped bridge the emotional distance until she felt a deeper connection.
Reflecting on her journey now, Khloe feels a deep connection with Tatum. “Of course, I’m obsessed with Tatum now,” she beams, expressing how her initial aloofness has turned into intense love and affection.
She is committed to sharing her story to support others going through surrogacy, emphasizing that every journey is unique and should not be compared. “Anyone going through surrogacy, don’t compare yourself to anyone else’s journey,” she advised, acknowledging the incredible gift of the surrogacy opportunity and expressing gratitude to surrogates.
“It’s such a beautiful thing. But give yourself grace. Give yourself patience,” Khloe urged.
