La Primitiva – HISTORY

More than 200 years have passed since the primitive lottery came to our homes.. This game began at the suggestion of Don Leopoldo de Gregorio, known as the Marquis of Esquilache and who was the Minister of Finance. His decision was made with the goal of getting more money for the government coffers without having to raise or create taxes. All this during the reign of Carlos III.

On December 10, 1763, the first drawing of the Primitive Lottery, most similar to the modern one, although known as the “Lottery by Numbers,” took place. Already in the first draw, the results were very effective: 187,500 reais were received, of which 75% was allocated to prizes and 25% to the state.

When did Loteria Primitiva originate?

After half a century of development of the same mechanics, in 1812 the first changes were made to this drawing. Among the innovations, he highlighted the fact that numbers should be printed on tickets. It was this innovation that led to it making a second change to its name and becoming known as the “Modern Lottery”, marking the beginning of the National Lottery as we know it today.

The draw has since been renamed to its current name. From the name “Lottery by Numbers” it became Lotería Primitiva. It developed normally until the government decided to put an end to the above-mentioned hoax in 1862.

Return of the draw

The primitive lottery was abolished over the years, but in 1985 the lottery was reinstated by Ministerial Order in accordance with Royal Decree 1360/1985 of 1 August, published by the Bank of England on 7 August 1985. The opening of this new stage, the first draw took place on October 17 of the same year. Following the example of its origin, the result was a complete success: 473,213,425 pesetas were collected.

Once the game was launched again, they began introducing other new features that solidified it as we know it. La Primitiva began playing every Thursday, and tickets cost 25 pesetas apiece.

The first winning tickets came out during the fourth drawing, in November of that year. It was then that prizes worth millions of pesetas were awarded. The three top category winners each won 66 million pesetas. Even in the same month, the drawing gave away another big prize to three other winners, who won $125 million.

Rising prices

Given the popularity gained since then, in July 1986 it was decided to increase the price of the game, and the bets increased to 50 pesetas. Because of this, the prizes were larger, so much so that one of the winners that year received 80 million pesetas. The lottery’s success continued to grow until its price was raised to 100 pesetas in 1988.

For the same reason, the game was moved to another day, resulting in the creation of Saturday’s Primitiva. This also introduced the so-called “brown ticket”, allowing players to bet on two draws each week. In 2000, its price will increase to 150 pesetas, which will become 1 euro when the currency is changed in Spain.

Primitiva celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2005, but it was not until 2015 that the largest award in history was presented. On October 15 of the same year, a guesser from Barcelona won 101 million euros.

last news

As the distribution continued to grow over the years, they continued to introduce new features. In 2010, it was decided that if there were no first category winners in a draw, the prize would automatically be transferred to the first category pool in the next draw. Likewise, two years later, a “special category” was included, which is obtained by adding the six numbers of the winning combination and the return.

How does the Primitiva charge?

Given that these are usually very large amounts, it is important to clearly understand how the prize should be claimed to avoid any tax penalties. The first thing to keep in mind is that the prize is not taxable when received, so it must be declared in the following year’s income tax by paying taxes on asset gains.

According to the established conditions, the collaborating organization in which the prize is claimed must retain 20% of the amount awarded, less 40,000 euros. which are exempt from tax. On the other hand, residents of Spain receive a tax-free amount since the withholding applied by the organization is the same as the tax payable.

On the other hand, amounts less than 2000 euros can be obtained through any LAE administration. If the winner receives €2,000 or more, the prize can be claimed through any financial institution agreed to by LAE. All this is to say that these organizations should not charge any fees, force you to open any checking account or charge you any fees for the procedure.

Another thing to keep in mind if you receive a prize is how long it expires. The expiration date is indicated on the back of all tickets. This period begins the day after the drawing. If the deadline passes, the lucky winner will no longer be lucky and will not be able to enter the winning amount into the drawing. Considering this situation, the amount will be transferred to the State Treasury. However, there are exceptions: if the day of collection of the prize falls on a holiday, the period for receiving the prize is extended by one day.

It is also important to store the ticket carefully, as if it is damaged, the collection process will slow down. This is because in this case, the winner must ask ONLAE to check whether the ticket matches the sung number, so that they can later analyze it and decide whether it is good or not.
