The serious crisis at Productos El Arco has entered a new phase, more harmful for the staff, at least for a significant part of it. The group sent its first termination letters yesterday after deciding to lay off a number of workers aged between 25 and 27 with immediate effect, according to sources consulted yesterday. Many of the victims found out about this through the works council, to which management presented a list of layoffs that affected both the warehouse service and office and store staff.
The above-mentioned sources claim that it was the layoffs that were included in the restructuring plan and sale of Grupo El Arco supermarkets based in Langreo to Galician Grupo Cuevas. This measure comes as a result of just over a week ago the Commercial Court No. 1 of Oviedo approved the approval plan submitted by the company, thereby rejecting the appeals filed by several creditors.
Among the workforce of about 600 people, the announcement of the layoffs caused a great stir as those affected gradually learned about it. This newspaper was able to confirm that some of the victims were even on sick leave. The letters already sent inform about the termination of contracts on May 15 “for objective reasons.” The company argues this for economic and administrative reasons.
El Arco Group also states that it is impossible to provide adequate compensation to laid-off workers, “given the treasury difficulties in which the company is immersed and the absolute lack of liquidity that the company has today.”
Likewise, terminated employees are informed that they are entitled to payment of wages due on the day of termination, including the amount corresponding to the days of notice.
Foods El Arco management informs employees that as part of a “restructuring of personal resources” after signing an agreement with Cuevas Group, “those jobs that are redundant must be depreciated, either because they are related to lines of business that El Arco will no longer will be used (as in the case of logistics platforms), either because they represent too large structural positions, since they are designed for a staff of more than 600 people, which the company has had in recent years and this. it will be significantly reduced due to the transfer of a significant part of it to Cuevas.”
The total amount of debts recognized by the El Arco group in the restructuring plan exceeds 31 million euros, of which 22 million are unpaid to its suppliers. Of these, 17 million are owed to almost 600 SMEs and the self-employed.
